SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Mario Golf: Super Rush’, ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 25th, 2021. There aren’t a whole ton of new releases today, but there are a couple of big-pants ones in the list. Mario Golf: Super Rush brings some golfing fun, while a guy who looks suspiciously like Tony Hawk has some skateboarding game out. There are a few other interesting things in the list, and a few very bad things. Usual Friday, then. Speaking of, there’s also a massive list of new sales for you to consider, along with the expiring sales for the weekend. Let’s get to it!

New Releases

Mario Golf: Super Rush ($59.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The latest installment in the long-running, high-quality Mario Golf series is here. Mario and company head out to the links for a bit of golfing fun, and this time there are a few new modes to try. Speed Mode and Battle Mode add some wild quirks to the normally laidback sport, and Golf Adventure gives you a nice little story mode to play through. It’s perhaps not the full-on golf RPG you might want, but its presence is appreciated. I’m hoping I’ll have a chance to review this one, but we’ll have to see how things shake out. You probably know what to expect from the nuts and bolts of it anyway.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 ($39.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Oh yeah, now this is the good stuff. The legendary Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 get the remake treatment in this impressive bundle with all of the pro skaters, levels, moves, and a good chunk of the soundtrack making a return. Play in local two-player modes or hop online and skate with people from around the world. The only bummer on this set is that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 isn’t in here, but I guess they have to save something for another pack. This Switch version makes a few compromises from the big-pants versions, but it runs well and still looks quite good. If you’ve never played these games before, you really should give them a shot. And if you have, you don’t need me to sell you on this package.

#1 Crosswords Bundle ($5.99)

It’s that classic dilemma: do you want to buy #1 Crosswords, or do you want to buy #1 Anagrams? What if I told you there was a way to buy both of these smash hit Switch games at once? Okay, stop. Too much excitement. It’s not good for you. Anyway, that’s what this is. A bundle of the aforementioned games, offering you two types of puzzles with dozens of each to solve. Not really worth buying if you already own one or the other, but I could see someone wanting both in one fell swoop. The usual caveat applies: check and see if either or both of the games are on sale before picking this up, as they may be cheaper separately. Probably not, but it’s possible.

Promesa ($4.99)

This is what I would usually call an ‘experience game’, but it feels like it’s even pushing the boundaries of that definition. Interactive art piece, maybe? Whatever you want to call it, Promesa is quite interesting. The premise sees you making your way through the dreams and memories that come out of a conversation between a grandfather and his grandchild. Each playthrough will show a different arrangement of scenes, so you’re meant to go through the game multiple times to see it all. This isn’t going to be for everyone, or even most, but if you’re in the right mood this might work for you.

Loopindex ($4.99)

I like the look of this one. It’s an action-puzzler where you control some robots and try to get through each area. The gimmick is that you can set some of the robots to loop certain actions while you take control of another one, an essential skill for making progress. There are more than 70 levels to clear, and you can pull in a second player to help you out via local multiplayer. The idea is solid, the game looks well-made enough, and the price is right. I’ll pick this up and see how well I like it. If it wows me, I’ll have a review of some kind up early next week.

Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek ($14.99)

The niche that Artifex Mundi serves with most of its releases has gotten a lot more crowded in the last year or so, but the audience seems hungry enough to support the additional competition. That said, Artifex Mundi’s releases do seem to come at a slower rate these days. Here’s a new hidden object adventure game in the publisher’s usual style, with lots of environments to visit, objects to find, and puzzles to solve. The story sees you wake up outside of a town with a bit of a fuzzy memory. Can you figure out what happened to you? And what will you do if you find the truth?

Sweet Sugar Candy ($3.99)

This latest release from Pix Arts is, quite literally, exactly the same game as Benjamin Kistler’s Sweets Swap. That’s no coincidence, of course. Both Kistler and Pix Arts bought a template from the Unity Asset Store called Match 3 Sweet Sugar, gave it a new title, and pooped it out on the Switch. It’s a complete and utter rip-off of Candy Crush Saga, except you pay up front for it and there’s significantly less content. I’m not going to shed any tears for King, but it really is unfortunate how much of this trash is littering the eShop.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Well, that’s not that bad of a list. With so much of the good stuff part of last week’s sale, I didn’t think there would be much for this week’s crop. But there are some really solid games in there like Chasm, A Dark Room, Shing!, Mercenaries Saga, Shadows of Adam, and so on. Take a careful look through. There isn’t a whole lot in the weekend outbox, but check that to just to be on the safe side.
