ISS crew told to hide due to threat of space debris

The International Space Station has been warned about space debris. Russian ground control has ordered the cosmonauts to hide inside the Soyuz spacecraft, and Houston told its astronauts to hide inside the US segment.

The debris – reportedly a part of a satellite – will pass close by at 07:06 GMT

On Wednesday, the ISS maneuvered to avoid a collision with a piece of a Chinese weather satellite that was destroyed by a weapon test in 2007.

The crew had two days to prepare for Wednesday’s incident. This time they did not have enough time for maneuvering. In cases such as this, the crew is instructed to retreat to their spaceships for potential evacuation.
